The current situation

IFUs are an essential part of disposable medical device packaging, providing:

  • Directions on how to use the product.
  • Possible warnings, side effects and mandatory legal information.

Standard IFUs use a thick (50 – 60g/m², caliper 65 – 80µm), lignin containing grade of paper, which is usually folded several times. This format has been the standard for the last 100 years!

Issues with standard single-page IFU documents:

  • The IFU is very large when fully unfolded, the font is small, and information is difficult to find.
  • They are inconvenient to use, very difficult to fold up again, and difficult to put back in the packaging.
  • Only a limited number of language versions fit on the same IFU.
  • Extra logistics and warehouse costs because each IFU version requires its own stock item number, packaging process, and warehouse space.

Ultrathin paper is totally different from standard IFU document paper. It is often used in texts with many pages, including dictionaries, legal books and religious publications.
